Our Approach

Clean & Sober Transitional Living

Clean & Sober Transitional Living (CSTL) is a long-term recovery housing program that has enjoyed tremendous success with alcoholics and addicts seeking long-term sobriety. Our program embraces 12-Step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous and requires residents to be active members in those programs.

Our two-phase approach to sober living offers a unique continuum of support as residents strengthen their recovery.

Our 14 beautiful homes function as a community – a community that offers more than a typical, smaller sober living facility does because of the number of residents, the fellowship, and the support and encouragement that fellowship with other alcoholics and drug addicts naturally enables. CSTL’s residents reinforce their recovery through support with other recovering persons.

Rules and Expectations

Residents must agree to abide by the rules and expectations and to be active in a 12-step program, attending a minimum of four 12-step meetings a week and obtaining a sponsor. Attendance at our Sunday night house meeting is mandatory. They must agree not to drink or use drugs and to conduct themselves in a manner that is conducive to recovery. Violation of these conditions or of any of CSTL’s rules and expectations could mean an appearance before a panel of senior peer residents (which we call the Judicial Committee), which can result in consequences and/or termination.

Random Testing

At CSTL, we conduct random tests to detect drug and alcohol usage among residents. We have a clear policy in place regarding the use of alcohol and drugs. Individuals are unaware of when they will be selected for a urine analysis. If someone tests positive, their contract is immediately terminated.

We are open to providing support to residents who honestly admit to using drugs or alcohol, i.e. to a “relapse.” They must be willing to engage in a process that includes presenting a comprehensive relapse prevention plan to our Judicial Committee. If they agree to accept the consequences determined by the panel, and subsequently test negative, they are usually able to resume their residency with us.

Life at CSTL

CSTL residents are required to be employed, seeking employment, going to school, or participating in something related to recovery. This requirement facilitates recovery because the resident is “doing and experiencing” real life and developing develop self-esteem and regular living patterns, while living in a supportive environment of like-minded peers seeking recovery from drugs and alcohol.

Another example of how CSTL’s structure allows our residents to develop self-esteem and new life patterns is that, after one week of residency, Phase One residents are allowed to have up to two overnight passes in any given seven-day period to spend away from CSTL. Many Phase One residents take advantage of these passes to spend an extended period of time with their families and friends, and returning home to CSTL after these overnight passes provides more accountability and support to remain clean and sober while doing so.

Daily Meetings

Daily 12-Step meetings are conducted in one of our two meeting rooms; as a result, our residents do not have to leave the property to attend the four required 12-step meetings. These meetings held on CSTL property are open to the public and are attended by residents and non-CSTL residents. There are also a number of outside 12-Step meetings within a few mile radius of CSTL. Many residents carpool to these meetings.
